More Broken Promises, No New Jobs

I smell Bacon

I smell Bacon!

(TTfD) Today marks what history books — as approved by the Teachers Union — that Barack Obama can claim his first and so far only victory.  The $787 million (actually $862 billion, shshsh) stimulus is now one year old, and therefore America has recovered.  Or has it?

According to Reuters:

“Our work is far from over but we have rescued this economy from the worst of this crisis,” he [Obama]said.

Truth be told, even Obama’s own team was not really that interested in “Recovery.”

Looking back, were there any warning signs? There were, but not from the mainstream media whose job it is to watch the government. They came from concerned Americans. This one happens to have a talk show:

It is a fact that that any pundit can offer their take on the issues of the day. As the Obama Administration constantly claims, they knew what they were getting into by “inheriting” a financial crisis. To present a more clear picture, how did Obama promise he would handle the finances of the American people?

According to Politifact:

Allow five days of public comment before signing bills

Obama promised he “will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days.”

One could argue that nothing was more urgent than passing the Stimulus bill in order to stabilize the country’s financial assets.  Yet, a year later, only a bit over a third of the actual stimulus has been spent, indicating that the Administration never really did see this as an emergency.

What is somewhat true is that 95% of Americans could receive a tax cut. For married people filing jointly making $50k, they could potentially save $32 dollars. Maybe Americans are being ungrateful for this Obama-promised windfall; it is almost enough to put a tank of gas in a new Cash for Clunkers car.  Actually, it can be argued that if one did buy a Chrysler or GM vehicle, they lost a great deal more as they are already paying them to produce cars.

End income tax for seniors making less than $50,000

This was great campaign rhetoric, and it probably would have helped many people, but it never did come to fruition.  This measure never did make it in the Stimulus bill, but is included here to illustrate the bait and switch of politicians who would do or say anything to gain the power of office.

Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials

Obama likely never intended to keep this promise at all.  As the American Bar Association was one of his biggest supporters, how could he actually regulate an industry predominantly made up of lawyers?  From day one he not only let the lobbyists in, he also hired a bunch of them to write policy for him.

Had this promise been kept, Obama’s Presidency would have been truly historic.   As it stands, it is about what was expected.  The idea, however, of keeping special interests out of Washington is flawed logic, anyhow.  Who else would want to work there? But if a man can not keep a simple promise, how could he be expected to actually live up to the promised he made in regards to the stimulus?  He can not.

Reduce earmarks to 1994 levels

Obama failed, both professionally and personally with reigning in the pork.  This was truly a test of his leadership with a Democrat majority, and he failed to lead those of his own party any closer to trustworthiness.  He has been all too happy to sign pork-laden spending bills, too.

Had he been able to put controls on the Pork of fellow Democrats, his “home” state of Illinois probably would not have gotten a disproportionate number of stimulus-funded works projects.

The truth is a year has gone by in the Presidency, for the Porkulus and for our empty wallets.  Unemployment is out of control, and the nation is a joke to all countries foreign.  The Stimulus did nothing but line the vaults of banks and political cronies.

To be fair, Obama is a genius. He must be; he went to Harvard — I hear. The Stimulus may not have been a real smart move, but picking Joe Biden as his running mate has really worked out for him. Sometime between now and next election, he can blame Joe.

So, Happy Birthday Porkulus, I am sorry I did not get you anything this year.  I simply could not afford it, and now I think you understand why. You will never be just one more broken Obama promise to us; you will always be one of his most expensive ones. I hope.

I get that you believe Republican propaganda. Here is Gov Schwarzenegger describing how it has created 150,000 jobs in California alone.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE61K1GD20100221?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+reuters/topNews+%28News+/+US+/+Top+News%29

I respect, and like your position not to believe politicians. I am an independent. But I lose respect for Republicans when they lie. Like I asked before, how is it that they get you to vote against your own best interests?

  • JLancaster
So the Democrats do not lie? A true independent would have said that up front.

CBO: Stimulus bill created 2.1 million jobs
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100223/ap_on_go_co/us_stimulus_jobs
  • JLancaster
The government has created tons of jobs. Absolutely right. But the government never creates jobs in the private sector. Business creates jobs, and here is the shocker...so does wealth. Yes, rich people create jobs. Obama did not.

Actually, that story claims between 1 million and 2.1 million, which is kind of big range.
Here are the things you left out of that same story:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100223/ap_on_go_co/us_stimulus_jobs
"But the wide range of estimates means it won't resolve the debate over how effective the stimulus has been."

    And...
"The report said the most efficient parts of the stimulus include infrastructure projects such as road- and bridge-building and more generous unemployment benefits. On the other hand, the popular first-time homebuyer tax credit isn't a very efficient use of stimulus dollars, the report said."

    And to finish it:

"The stimulus measure has earned mixed grades from a public weary of a bad economy and increasingly concerned about out-of-control budget deficits. Democrats are seeking to renew several parts of the stimulus, however, including aid for state governments and extended unemployment insurance benefits for the long-term jobless.

The White House acknowledges the long-term debt burden of the stimulus measure will place a slight drag on the economy in future years."

There is no proof that the stimulus itself did anything but build greater debt. You may be unaware that bridge and road builders are not the only people unemployed.

But hey, free country still, you might think about getting your own blog. I would be sure to visit.

Typical of right-wing bloggers. Someone presents you with the truth and you have no reply.

Thank you for noticing my wing. I am sorry you the humor here. I will keep you in my prayers :)

You place conclusions that don't exist, you use cutsie phrases like a girly-man, and you ignore reality anytime you'd like to avoid a topic that would prove your position wrong. I'll give you credit for accepting Bush's deficits and his inability to veto.

You joke about jobs having been created, but the WSJ researched this and admits that jobs (several hundred thousand jobs) have been created. You can certainly keep believing Republican rhetoric but that would be contrary to your stated position not to believe politicians. I know you to be just a pro Republican and nothing else.

In Sep 2008 the economy collapsed. It had been drooping since 2007 and it finally broke in 2008. This was a result of the huge DOW and Housing bubbles created by the then current administration. With the economy grinding to a halt, there are two prescribed ways to let it recover: the Keynesian way and the Austrian way.

Under Keynes, government pumps expenditures to create economic activity. Under Obama, 50% of the expenditures were tax cuts (all of them implemented in the first few months), and the rest went for infrastructure and other select development projects. Those projects were intended to be spent over two years.

The fact that tax cuts and job creation hasn’t turned the economy around means that the problems created when housing and Dow crashed are much more serious that originally thought.

The other method is the Austrian method. This is creative destruction. Let it all fall and let it all come back all on its own. Under that theory, unemployment would have hit 33% or higher. I don’t think anyone has the stomach for that.

Tax breaks have now been proven to not work twice, once under Bush (it took 2 1/2 years for jobs to be created), and under Obama (1/2 of the stimulus are tax breaks).

Isn’t it funny how an avowed Republican such as yourself is now crying that the government isn’t doing enough about jobs.

  • Mendosa
Actually, the Bush tax cuts were utter failures for many reasons. They did not boost jobs at all, so shows the data. It is a Republican pipe dream or a lie, depending on where you sit, to state that they worked.

I doubt Obama promised magic. He promised it would slow down unemployment. Data shows it went past the promised 8%, but it is creating jobs.

Bush had the presidency for 8 years, 6 when Republicans had both houses. The largest deficits were under Republican congress/ Republican White House. Deficits slowed down substantially after 2006. You can believe what you want, but Bush had the veto pen. He either didn't do his job, or he did approve the spending.

If blaming Dems for 2 years of spending is fair game, then blaming the entire collapse of the economy under Bush is fair game. Is that what you are suggesting?

Your comment on keep believing is odd, very odd. What I post is based on data, facts. It is not based in any way on Bush's or Obama's word, or promises.

As far as I can tell, your blog is a blame democrat despite the mess Republicans have made. How do Republicans get you to vote against your own best interests?

  • JLancaster
A key point you are making here which I completely agree with is that government does a much worse job without solid opposition. It applies to both parties. And yes, I have fun with this blog particularly watching what the majority is doing, and not doing. I go after Republicans when I stumble across a reason to, but they are not running the show.

Republicans have already screwed up, not just with the spending but also with their own party. Now, it is the Dems turn, and I see nothing wrong with following that. In fact, I find the Dems much more entertaining to write about.

Your facts did not include the Obama budget. He has created a budget which will only serve to build the deficit further. He is in control of that; he chose to come forward with more massive spending. As far as jobs, there probably are some, and definitely there are many zip codes that are reporting great success with stimulus money.

On the other side, those zip codes don't exist :) I do this for pleasure, as a hobby. I am used to be the implications or liberals that I am not too smart. I can live with that :) But, since you are interested in facts, I am happy to discuss them!

The true Bush deficit was $485 bmillion in 2008. By October 2008 it went up another $100 billion. Add $700 billion for TARP, pushed easily through Congress by Dems, so I consider it bi-partisan. That would be the $1.3 Trillion Obama "inherited."

However, considering that the $700 billion was a short-term loan and $500 billion has already been repaid, that number we keep hearing does not hold up. The rest of the money from TARP went to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and that $200 billion will never be repaid.

So, the Bush deficit is large, and an outrage at $800 billion. Yes, it is entirely too much money, and he was a big spender. So...Obama started with that debt. I can accept that. He then added the stimulus, which was not meant to be paid back. Now, that brings the Obama deficit to double the Bush deficit. But don't get me wrong, Bush if still in office would be spending like that too.

Obama too has a veto pen, although he hasn't found it yet. Bush gave in to just about every bit of spending likely to keep his war funded. He played politics. They all do.

    Cheers!
  • Mendosa
It is easy to take a cheap shot at the Stimulus bill. You are a conservative or Republican and taking a potshot is oh-so-much-fun.

Anyone can throw stones and break a Window, but can you repair it? I doubt it. I seriously believe that you do not understand the economy, or even basic economics.

The first question I would ask is do you play it fair? Bush ran up $5T (with a T) in deficits; Obama significantly less. Yet you play only one side.

Economic signs are beginning to show that the Stimulus has been having its effect. The WSJ has printed an article quoting Republican Senators saying, privately, that it is working. Publicly, they have to keep guys like you in the dark.

A discussion going on at http://www.thegreatilluminator.com/blog/?p=8319 is illuminating. Republicans state that tax reductions work, but a detailed analysis of Bush showed that jobs didn't come back until 2005, two years after the 2003 tax cut.

I may post again if this is published
  • JLancaster
I have to agree with you: the Bush tax breaks worked. I agree, absolutely. I will take brief issue with the "whisperings" of some Republican Senators. I don't care what they think. If the Stimulus was so important, why have they only spent a third of it a year later?

Bush did not promise "magic," Obama did.

The Dem lie we live with in America is simple; They took control in 2006 elections. They had control over the financial policy, Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, and nearly everything else. They also voted to fund the war on terror.

Say what you will, that is fact. They also can not come together as a Party or even slightly listen to the people. I appreciate your comment; I understand how easy it can be to believe in things because they sound good. The Obama election buzz words were wonderful.

Keep believing! I know it is important to believe in people; I just choose to not place my faith in the words of politicians.
Best wishes, and know you are always welcome here.
